September slipped by us

School started here officially on September 4th and this year the girls are attending a Cyber School. A cyber school is a public school with some of the classwork and most of the tests on-line on the computer. They still have all their textbooks at the house and their daily schoolwork is done at home, but all their assessments are taken on-line and there are interactive lessons on-line to accompany the books. The cool part for me (aside form having all their lessons pre-planned for the entire year!) was that each girl was sent all her books (textbooks and workbooks), all her lab and art materials AND a computer and printer – FREE. Free, of course, meaning being paid for by my tax dollars, but still, it was no cash outlay on our parts. The boys are still being “traditionally” homeschooled, which mostly means we bought all their textbooks and workbooks and that I’m making it all up as I go along.

In September the new sport around here became tennis. Dan plays very well (he played in High School and somehow hasn’t lost very much edge) so he dragged us out one night to some courts nearby the house. The kids absolutely loved it – go figure! I haven’t volleyed in years and aside from being fairly rusty (and OLD) I think I did ok. Dan is really enjoying the one-on-one time with each of the kids teaching them the basics. The rest of us play round robin or mixed doubles while he cycles through each “lesson”. Our biggest problem is loss of light. The courts we use aren’t lit and we really only get an hour or an hour and ½ in before it gets too dark at night now. Still, he tries to get out of work at 6 at least 2 nights a week so we can play. The other issue Dan has is, I am no match for his skills. He and I can volley and both get a good game in, but if he really opens up and plays like he wants to, I can’t hit anything! He’s amazingly good. He’s kind of hoping Santa will bring him a ball machine so he can get some real practice in the spring! For now he is starting to pepper our family tennis sessions with sessions involving guys from work who can at least give him a workout (though I don’t think anyone’s beaten him yet!!). - J
