October is the official start to the SWIM SEASON! Nothing says fall is here in our house like the smell of chlorine and the lack of clean towels! They started October 1st and we’ve been at the pool 5-6 days a week ever since. Meets started Oct. 27th and continue until March 2008. The truly amazing part is that they don’t have practice on Friday nights and yet as soon as school is finished on Fridays they want to go to the YMCA and swim for an hour!! I suspect that a few of them wouldn’t complain with a 2 hour practice every night instead of 1 hour, but around here pool time seems to be at a premium. The only alternative is to get up early (5:30am) and head to the pool for an hour before school and I’m not ready yet for that level of commitment. So they are stuck with the 1 hour a night with the team and whatever we can add on Fridays.

Halloween was a little different at our house this year. Erin decided she was too old to “trick-or-treat”, and only conceded at the last minute to be a pedestrian (read “no costume required”) because we forced her to go with us house to house. She didn’t miss out on too many treats collected, and did later admit that if she’d had friends her age to go out with she MIGHT have dressed up. Elise went as Scheherazade, the Arabian princess from 1001 Arabian Nights, Liam dressed up as a Phoenix Ninja (a different Ninja that the last 3 years ninja’s costumes) and Declan decided on the classic Batman. We were very fortunate that Halloween night was clear and nearly 60 degrees (F), as it is usually bitter cold and either raining or snowing. This was especially good for Elise as Scheherazade tended to dress like a belly dancer!! - J
